Privacy-Preserving Joint Forecasting of Residential Load and Photovoltaic Generation via Federated Multi-Task Learning

چکیده :
Growing deployment of residential photovoltaic (PV) systems and smart meters demands accurate short-term forecasting of both electricity consumption and PV generation, yet centralized machine learning requires aggregating fine-grained household data, raising privacy and scalability concerns. Federated learning (FL) enables collaborative training without sharing raw data, but existing studies mostly treat load and PV forecasting independently under unrealistic IID assumptions. This paper proposes a federated multi-task learning framework that jointly forecasts residential load and PV generation using a shared LSTM encoder trained with FedAvg. Evaluated on a real Australian prosumer dataset under IID and realistic geographically clustered non-IID conditions, the framework retains up to 98.9% of centralized performance and even improves IID load forecasting accuracy by 3.5%, confirming federated multi-task learning as a viable, privacy-preserving solution for residential energy forecasting.
