A Framework for Strategic Orientations in Platform Business Model Innovation

چکیده :

Platform Business Model Innovation (PBMI) has emerged as a cornerstone of digital transformation, reshaping firm strategies and driving industry evolution. This article investigates the strategic orientations of PBMI as articulated in the literature to examine how firms design, adapt, and recalibrate their business models in digital ecosystems. Employing a narrative literature review method and drawing on databases such as Web of Science (WoS) and Scopus, the study synthesizes and critically evaluates existing research. Findings reveal PBMI as a multidimensional and dynamic process shaped by the interplay of four dualities: proactive–reactive, incremental–radical, open–closed, and sustaining–disruptive. Our analysis highlights how firms strategically integrate these orientations to balance resilience with innovation and to secure long-term competitive advantage. Building on this synthesis, the paper advances a conceptual framework. It positions PBMI as a continuum of strategic possibilities rather than a set of discrete choices. The study concludes with implications for theory and practice, and outlines avenues for future research on PBMI’s evolving role in digital ecosystems.
