An SPC-Based Monitoring Framework for Financial Resilience: Evidence from Iranian Banks

چکیده :
The stability of the banking sector is a fundamental pillar of economic health, as excessive leverage can rapidly increase vulnerability to systemic crises. To address the need for proactive risk management, this study develops an SPC-based monitoring framework that provides early warning signals for financial resilience for 15 Iranian banks (2014-2025) by combining financial econometrics with Statistical Process Control. Using inferential statistics and Individual-Moving Range charts, the research enables periodic dynamic monitoring of bank debt ratios against Basel safety thresholds to complement traditional, lagging performance indicators. The results show that excessive debt significantly reduces operational resilience, especially in highly leveraged private banks. The SPC framework identified out-of-control signals coinciding with major macroeconomic shocks, revealing that 11 of the 15 banks exhibited persistent inability to meet the predefined leverage specification. Consequently, regulators should adopt periodic leverage monitoring to prevent systemic financial contagion.
