Comparing the Accuracy of Machine Learning Algorithms in Predicting Non-performing Loans of Banks

چکیده :
this research assesses the accuracy of three machine learning algorithms in forecasting banks’ non-performing loans. Non-performing loans are those not paid within the terms specified in the contract between the borrower and the bank. Predicting such loans is crucial for banks as they pose challenges to the banks’ liquidity management. Four macroeconomic and five bank-specific variables were selected to forecast non-performing loans. The data of these variables from 2010 to 2021 were extracted from reliable and available information sources. Anaconda software with Python programming language was used, and Tobit regression, K-nearest neighbor (KNN), and random forest algorithms were applied. Evaluation criteria included Mean Absolute Error, Mean Squared Error, R2-Score, and Root Mean Squared Error. The study found that the random forest model exhibited higher prediction accuracy compared to other models used.
