An Explainable Machine Learning Framework for Stock Selection

چکیده :
This study examines whether explainable machine learning can support transparent monthly stock selection within a fixed Dow 30 universe. Ten leakage-safe financial features are used in an expanding-window Random Forest with prior-only temporal validation to rank each stock by the probability of belonging to the following month’s realized Top-10. After ranking, the ten highest-scoring stocks are selected and assigned equal 10% weights solely for out-of-sample economic evaluation. TreeSHAP is applied as a separate explanation layer to identify the features most influential in the Random Forest rankings, with six-month beta, average dollar volume, and three-month momentum showing the highest pooled mean absolute SHAP importance. Across 95 out-of-sample holding periods from February 2018 through December 2025, the RF Top-10 evaluation grows $1 to 3.476, corresponding to a 17.04% annualized return and a 0.904 Sharpe ratio, while the Dow Jones price-index reference ends at 1.843. The results demonstrate a transparent and auditable stock-selection framework in which prediction, ranking, explanation, and economic evaluation are kept distinct.
