Optimization under Antifragility: How to Benefit from Uncertainty

Robust optimization gives us a tractable and principled way to make decisions under uncertainty, but its instinct is defensive: it searches for the solution that survives the worst case. We ask a different question. Drawing on Taleb's notion of antifragility, we extend the Bertsimas-Sim budget-of-uncertainty model by allowing the budget parameter to take negative values. In this regime the dual variables that ordinarily price protection instead reward exposure, the feasible set expands toward favorable realizations, and the objective improves with volatility rather than degrading against it. We make the construction precise. We prove that the linear reformulation remains valid for a negative budget, we identify three conditions, namely convex response, a structurally bounded downside, and non-negligible variance, under which the antifragile posture strictly improves the expected objective, and we treat hormetic systems whose benefit is real but bounded by a finite optimal stress threshold. Two worked examples, a supply chain and a portfolio, make the mechanism concrete.
